Your firewall, your WAF, your EDR — none of them are designed to stop the threat that is already inside your network. Insider threats are fundamentally different from external attacks because the attacker has legitimate access, knows your systems, and operates within the trust boundary you have established.   2. Downloading unusually large volumes of data. A sales rep who normally accesses 20 customer records per day suddenly downloading 10,000 records is a high-confidence indicator. Data exfiltration almost always involves volume anomalies.
  3. Accessing resources unrelated to job function. A marketing analyst querying the financial database or an intern accessing the source code repository are both worth investigating. Least-privilege violations are often the earliest detectable signal.
  4. Attempting to bypass security controls. Disabling antivirus, using personal VPNs on corporate devices, connecting USB drives when the policy prohibits it, or attempting to access restricted systems multiple times. These indicate either security awareness failure or intentional evasion.
